Association between chronic lymphocityc thyroiditis and papillary thyroid carcinoma: Systematic review and meta-analysis of studies on surgical specimens

Introduction. Inconsistent results exist in the literature regarding hypothesis statement suggesting an increased likelihood of documenting papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) surgical specimens with changes compatible chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis. Existing meta-analyses have included studies that are not methodologically comparable and do propose clear sources bias, thus, this is justification for present meta-analysis. Methods. A search PubMed Embase was performed from January 1, 1950 to December 31, 2020. Retrospective comparing prevalence without thyroiditis were obtained. The collected evidence statistically analyzed. Results. total 22 articles included. study population consisted 63,548 specimens. pooled OR, based on studies, 1.81 (95% CI: 1.51-2.21). There heterogeneity between distribution ratios opportunity across (I²= 91%; p>0.00001). funnel plot shape analysis appears be symmetrical, indicating absence bias attributable small studies. Conclusions. current suggests there risk which thyroiditis-compatible observed; however, will possible control retrospective so we recommend studying diagnosing PTC using prospective methodologies.
